The Ford mustang has been around since 1964 and is the most successful vehicle launched by Ford ever.  This vehicle was launched after the Model A.  There are five generations of changes this vehicle has been through.

The first generation of the Mustang was from 1964 up until 1973.  The general prototype of the vehicle had two seats and included a front-mounted engine roadster.  Later through this generation the design was remodeled into a four-seat.  The concept of the Mustang was to provide an affordable vehicle around $2,368 made with simple components.  The drivetrain components of the first generation Mustang came from the Ford Fairlane and the Ford Falcon.

In 1974, the second generation of Mustangs emerged as strict pollution laws and the OPEC oil embargo emerged.  Lee Iacocca, the president of Ford Motor Company ordered for a more fuel efficient version.  This version of the automobile would be based on the Ford Maverick.  However, after finalizing vehicle it was based on the Ford Pinto.  This version of the Mustang was more compact and offered more efficiency and even came in a hatchback version.  The Cobra II and the King Cobra were introduced in the second generation.

The third generation of the Mustang took place from 1979 through 1993.  This vehicle completely restyled the interior for total comfort to seat four people.  It had a larger trunk.  This Mustang included body styles of the coupe, hatchback, and a convertible.  In 1987, the Ford Probe was offered which was considered to be the biggest facelift of the Mustang.  This was a Japanese designed automobile with front wheel drive.

Between 1994 through 2004, the Mustang underwent the biggest major redesign in almost fifteen years.  The code name was “SN-95”.  The vehicle was based on the rear wheel drive option and the first ever notchback coupe Ford model became available.  During this generation, Ford retired the 302 4.9 liter small block engine after almost 40 years.  The Mustang GT introduced the 4.6 liter V8 engine with 225 horsepower.  This vehicle included sharp contours and a new edge styling.  The body work had creases for the first time.

The Mustang is in its 5th generation since 2005.  Again, Ford completely redesigned the Mustang echoing the older designs of the 1960’s.  This generation has improved in a larger and more powerful engine with the same automatic transmission.  The latest 2010 model was unveiled online at the 2008 Los Angeles International Auto Show and will be available to the public for purchase in 2009.

The Ford Mustang has been the most successful automobile for Ford since 1964, since the unveiling of the original roadster version.  This vehicle has gone through many changes over the years and through generations but today the style echoes the most favored models Ford first released.
